Pawtucket, Rhode Island — Police swarmed the Dennis M. Lynch Arena on Monday afternoon after reports of a mass shooting inside the facility during what multiple outlets described as a youth hockey game.
Early reports indicated multiple people were injured, though officials had not publicly confirmed an exact number of victims or the severity of injuries at the time of initial coverage.
Several reports also said the suspected shooter was pronounced dead at the scene. Police had not released identifying information about the suspect or clarified whether the death occurred as a result of law enforcement action or another cause.
As the incident unfolded, nearby businesses and bystanders described chaotic moments outside the arena. One account described people running into a nearby Walgreens seeking safety and help, prompting employees to close, evacuate, and call 911 while people sheltered inside.
Local media reported only that there was a “significant police presence” at the arena on Andrew D. Ferland Way, underscoring how limited confirmed information remained in the immediate aftermath.
News outlets covering the developing scene said the shooting occurred while teams were on the ice and families were in the stands. By late afternoon, the situation was being treated as an active, fast-moving investigation.
