Dave Spaulding, Law Officer’s Firearms columnist, will conduct two seminars geared toward law enforcement next month at the SHOT Show in Orlando, Fla. Titled “Developing the Combative Mind,” each seminar will cover what it means to have a combative mind and how it fits into a personal defense plan. Some of the key elements discussed will include preparing mentally, minimizing reaction time, scanning properly, controlling fear and mastering other survival techniques.
Spaulding is a 28-year law-enforcement veteran, retiring at the rank of lieutenant. He currently works for a federal security contractor. He’s worked in all facets of law enforcement—corrections, communications, patrol, evidence collection, investigations, undercover operations, training and SWAT, and has authored more than 600 articles for various firearm and law enforcement periodicals. He is also the author of the best-selling books Defensive Living and Handgun Combatives.
Spaulding will present “Developing the Combative Mind” on Friday, Jan. 12 in Room 307C from 0930 hrs–1100 hrs, and on Saturday, Jan. 13, in Room 308D from 1030 hrs–1130 hrs.

Las Vegas Metropolitan Police lieutenant Randy Sutton, who produced True Blue: Police Stories by Those Who Have Lived Them, has announced plans for a new edition of the acclaimed book. True Blue II: More Police Stories by Those Who Have Lived Them will raise funds for building the proposed National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund Museum in Washington, D.C.
“The purpose of the book is twofold,” says Sutton, who also authored the critically acclaimed book A Cop’s Life. “Raising funds is an important aspect, but giving a voice to our nation’s law officers is equally important.” The first volume of True Blue, which raised more than $30,000 for the families of the law enforcement officers who lost their lives in the World Trade Center attacks, contained 55 stories written by active-duty and retired law enforcement officers from around the United States. Many of the short stories dealt with the often hidden emotional aspects of policing.
