We’ve spoken about SAFEGUARD Recruiting many times here because they have solved the recruiting crisis and we have watched them evolve through the years to a level that every agency should be paying attention.

Their latest announcement aims to solve the very real issue of police candidates not being prepared for the fitness portion off the hiring process and they couldn’t have found a more applicable partner in Adam Boyd, a renowned expert in fitness and owner of Soleful Training.

The Fitness Challenge in Police Recruiting
Despite advances in recruitment strategies, police academies continue to face a significant hurdle: the physical fitness of candidates. While societal fitness standards may have evolved, the rigor required of law enforcement officers remains steadfast. SAFEGUARD Recruiting recognized this discrepancy and the urgent need for tailored fitness programs that ensure recruits meet essential physical standards.

The difficulty lies not only in attracting qualified individuals but also in ensuring that they can successfully complete the physical assessments that are required to enter the profession. The strategic partnership with Adam Boyd aims to bridge this gap by integrating dedicated fitness training into the recruitment process.

The “Fit to Protect” Program
The cornerstone of Adam Boyd’s collaboration with law enforcement agencies is the development of the “Fit to Protect” program. This meticulously crafted initiative is designed to equip recruits with the physical prowess necessary to surpass the rigors of police fitness exams, including push-ups, sit-ups, and the 1.5-mile run.

Key Components of Fit to Protect

The program emphasizes realistic, achievable goals tailored to police entry fitness standards. Participants engage in weekly structured workouts that incrementally build endurance and strength.

Data-Driven Success

The program boasts quantitative success, with participants experiencing a 48% increase in push-ups and a 43% improvement in sit-ups.

Time-efficient and Accessible

Designed for individuals with varying fitness levels, the program avoids overwhelming recruits with demanding schedules. The program is accessible in a 8-week and optional 12-week program, which caters to different starting points and progressions.

Motivation and Long-term Impact

The approach fosters lifelong fitness habits that benefit recruits well beyond the academy and emphasizes the importance of sustaining physical health throughout an officer’s career.

Mastering the Oral Boards
Physical fitness is just one aspect of successful police recruitment. Adam Boyd’s program also addresses the often-overlooked hurdle of the oral board process. Young candidates, in particular, may struggle with face-to-face communication due to the digital nature of modern interactions.

“Many of these kids, they’re kids to me, they didn’t grow up in a social environment that maybe I did, without phones or Facebook. Oral boards are face-to-face interaction.” — Dr. Travis Yates

Oral Board Preparation Program

Candidates learn the purpose and expectations of oral boards including strategies for demonstrating articulate, and comprehensive responses.

Practical Communication Skills

The program emphasizes detailed, descriptive answers over basic, surface-level responses. Candidates are encouraged to express their thought processes clearly to differentiate themselves.

Empowering the Next Generation of Officers
The synergy between fitness and effective communication is critical in preparing recruits for a successful career in law enforcement. By addressing these dual aspects through the “Fit to Protect” and oral board preparation programs, agencies are better equipped to cultivate capable and dedicated officers.
