Change in the Air

If you’re a regular reader of Law Officer, then you know we work closely with and admire immensely the work of Concerns of Police Survivors (C.O.P.S.).

When a police officer is killed in the line of duty, the department ultimately has to return to business as usual. C.O.P.S. is a support group that deals specifically with the grief that lingers after the department has “moved on.” They do this through support networks, retreats, pursuing benefits on behalf of surviving family and coworkers and providing departments with the tools they need to really deal with grief.

The staff at C.O.P.S. is the reason for its success. Executive Director Suzie Sawyer has excelled at picking a team dedicated to helping those who need help.

Suzie recently announced her plans to retire, and we all know she will be missed. She was a co-founder and has been a guiding light for all who worked with the organization. An outsized personality, Suzie loves what she does and she does it as only she can.

But we also know that, through Suzie’s hard work and the work of her staff, C.O.P.S. will continue to grow as an organization. We wish them luck as the search for a new executive director and look forward to working with them far into the future.

Suzie’s official retirement date is May 16, 2011. A transition committee is looking for a new executive director. Applicants can seek additional information by contacting Linda Gregory at 901/573-1020 or [email protected].
