PHOENIX, AZ — A routine traffic stop turned violent in north Phoenix on May 25, 2025, when a driver physically attacked a police officer, leading to an officer-involved shooting and the suspect’s arrest.
According to the Phoenix Police Department, the incident occurred around 2:27 p.m. near 25th Street and Cactus Road. A uniformed officer had pulled over a vehicle and was speaking with the driver, who was already outside his car and exhibiting confrontational behavior from the outset.
As the officer explained the reason for the stop and requested the man’s driver’s license, the situation escalated. The driver grew increasingly hostile, refused to comply, and demanded a supervisor. Recognizing the rising tension, the officer called for backup.
The encounter quickly turned physical when the suspect struck at the officer’s head and attempted to grab the officer’s holstered firearm. A struggle ensued, during which the officer discharged his weapon.

A bystander across the street captured video of the altercation. In the footage, a passerby can be seen rushing to the officer’s aid, attempting to pull the suspect off during the scuffle.
Responding officers arrived moments later and rendered medical aid, applying a tourniquet to the suspect’s leg. Phoenix Fire Department personnel transported the man to a nearby hospital with injuries described as non-life-threatening. He was released the following day and booked into the Maricopa County Jail.
The officer sustained multiple injuries during the attack and was treated and released from the hospital.
The Phoenix Police Department is continuing its investigation into the incident.
