A Pennsylvania State Police corporal was shot and killed during a traffic stop Sunday night in Chester County. Authorities said Cpl. Timothy O’Connor stopped a vehicle after receiving a report of an erratic driver. As he approached the vehicle, the driver opened fire.
Trooper O’Connor was fatally wounded in the encounter.
The shooting happened around 8:15 p.m. near Compass and Michael roads. Investigators said the suspect then exited the vehicle and killed himself. NBC Philadelphia identified the suspect as Jesse Nathan Elks, 32, of Honey Brook.
Cpl. O’Connor had served with the Pennsylvania State Police since 2010. He is survived by his wife and young daughter. Pennsylvania officials, including Gov. Josh Shapiro, publicly mourned his death, and state leaders ordered flags lowered in his honor.
