JERSEY CITY, N.J.  An off-duty New Jersey officer was battered unconscious by a group of men hurling racial slurs at him early Sunday morning, authorities said.

City spokeswoman Kimberly Wallace-Scalcione confirmed that Jersey City Police officers were flagged down at 3:27 a.m. in the area of Grove Street and Newark Avenue. They discovered one of their own, a 42-year-old off-duty Jersey City police officer, bleeding from his head and face, NJ.com reported.

The victim, who is white, said he was assaulted by a group of 10 men. During the beatdown he identified himself as a police officer multiple times before losing consciousness. The group of thugs then fled the scene, leaving the off-duty officer in terrible condition.

The unidentified 42-year-old victim was taken to a local hospital. According to NJ.com, he sustained severe head trauma before getting treated and released.

Jersey City officials did not release any other details regarding the crime—such as suspect descriptions and/or racial epithets that were used.
