Philadelphia – Three Philadelphia police officers were injured early Thursday morning during a traffic stop in the city’s Kensington section, after police say a driver tried to flee as officers attempted to take control of the vehicle near Kensington and Allegheny avenues.
According to police, the stop took place around 3 a.m. when a suspect vehicle pulled away from officers. One officer was struck, and another officer’s arm was caught inside the car as it sped away.
Once the vehicle stopped, officers had to break the window to take the driver into custody. Two officers declined medical treatment, and one officer was taken to the hospital. The driver was taken into custody, and police said the investigation was ongoing with charges not immediately announced.
Training Notes:
-
Treat every stop as a high-risk unknown until behavior proves otherwise, especially during late-night hours and in high-activity corridors.
-
Do not allow hands to linger inside the vehicle. If an arm or hand gets trapped, shift immediately to rescue and containment priorities and call it out clearly on the radio.
-
Positioning matters. Angle your body and feet so you can move if the vehicle surges, and avoid leaning into windows or door frames during the initial contact.
-
If a suspect is refusing commands and trying to flee, transition fast from compliance language to coordinated action, cover officer, containment, and clear roles.
-
If windows must be broken for access, protect your hands and forearms, and use tools and techniques that reduce laceration risk. Then control the suspect’s reach and waistband immediately.
