A. Scope

LawOfficer.com respects and values your privacy. LawOfficer wants you to understand how LawOfficer gathers, stores, and possibly shares information from you, about you, and your use of the LawOfficer.com website. This privacy policy outlines our privacy practices regarind the information collected and generated through your interaction with LawOfficer.com, which is voluntary.

When you use LawOfficer, you agree to the conditions of this Privacy Policy. If you do not agree to any of the provisions within this Privacy Policy, or its subsequent changes that may be made, which may occur without notice, then immediately stop using LawOfficer and its related services.

Intended Audience

LawOfficer is intended for law enforcement professionals in The United States and North America, and a broader general adult audience; it does not intentionally target minors or collect personal information from children under the age of 13. This Privacy Policy applies to all users of LawOfficer.com, including users who are registered or subscribe to LawOfficer.com and its services, and those who do not. LawOfficer does not directly sell products or services to European Union (EU) member states, but nonetheless complies with The EU General Data Protection Regulation.

Specifically, this Privacy Policy applies to the collection and generation of content about you and your use of LawOfficer.com, and it may include information that identifies specific persons, by the information that they voluntarily provide such as their name or email address. This Privacy Policy also concerns non-personal information, such as date of access of a particular article, and other aspects of using LawOfficer.com.

Residents of California

Residents of the state of California should refer to the California Consumer Privacy Act Notice below in Section VIII. By using LawOfficer.com, you agree to the terms and conditions of this Privacy Policy.

B. Security

LawOfficer.com strives to take every precaution necessary to ensure that data and information are protecting against loss, theft, and unauthorized disclosure and modification. LawOfficer cannot make any guarantee that your information will be completely secure and safeguarded—as no other entity can as well. LawOfficer takes privacy and security seriously and follows best practices to ensure your information is kept secure.

C. Information That May Be Generated & Collected

As a user of LawOfficer.com, the following data and information may be collected about you:

Information you provide while registering as a user. This includes the information you submit to register as a subscriber, author, or contributor of LawOfficer.com and any information you provide in creating an account, posting comments, or engaging in other activities while using LawOfficer.com. This information, for example, may include the name, email address, and other information you may provide.

Information shared in making public comments. This includes, for example, comments, ratings, or other information you provide in posting comments or ratings, and otherwise providing information about yourself, which may include your name, username, comment or rating content, etc. Information considered public may be made available to the general public and may also appear in search results on external search engines, such as  Google, for example.

Information from social media services and accounts. If you access or login to LawOfficer.com through a social media service or connect LawOfficer.com to a social media service, the information LawOfficer collects may also include your user ID and/or user name associated with that social media service, any information or content you have permitted the social media service to share with us, such as your profile picture, email address or friends lists, and any information you have made public in connection with that social media service. When you access or connect to LawOfficer through social media services you are authorizing LawOfficer to collect, store, and use such information and content in accordance with this Privacy Policy.

Information generated from use of LawOfficer.com and related services. When you access and interact with LawOfficer and its service providers, certain information about your usage and interaction may be collected. For example, servers may receive and record information about your computer, device, and browser, which may include your IP address, browser type, and other software or hardware information. If you access LawOfficer from a mobile device, LawOfficer may collect information that includes a unique identifier assigned to that device, geolocation data (including your precise location), and other transaction-related information for that device.

Please note that your browser may be configured to initially accept cookies, but you can change these settings to notify you when a cookie is being set or updated, or to block cookies altogether, or otherwise specify how cookies and similar technologies should be handled by your browser while using LawOfficer, and the internet more generally. Please refer to documentation for your specifc browser(s) for further information. Also, please note that by blocking any or all cookies you may not have access to certain features, content or personalization available through LawOfficer and some functions may appear broken, disabled, or otherwise unavailable.

LawOfficer websites, apps and other services use cookies and other tracking technologies when you first request a webpage and then store the data on your computer or other device so the LawOfficer website, app, or related services can access information when you make subsequent requests for pages from that service. These technologies may also be used to collect and store information about your usage of LawOfficer such as pages you have visited and content you have viewed.

Other parties that serve advertisements or provide other services, for example that enable content sharing or compile LawOfficer usage statistics, may use cookies and similar technologies to collect similar information when you use LawOfficer or services provided by other service providers. These providers may also use cookies and similar technologie and the information generated and gathered to recognize your activities on devices that you use, such as mobile devices, laptops, and other computer equipment. LawOfficer does not control these third-party services and technologies, and their use is governed by the privacy policies of parties using such technologies, as if you were using these services directly. For more information about third-party advertising, advertising networks, and similar parties that use cookies and similar technologies, including your preferences about them, see the section entitled “To deliver relevant advertisements,” below.

Additional information from supplemental sources. LawOfficer may supplement collected information with information from other sources, such as publically available information about your online and offline activity from social media services; commercially available sources of information; and information from LawOfficer affiliates and business partners.

Do Not Track Settings. At this time, due to the status of this emerging technology, LawOfficer strives to honor Do Not Track requests, but cannot fully ensure that every request and every aspect of such requests will be fully honored at this time. This aspect of the Privacy Policy will be updated as this technology advances.

D. Disclosure & Use

LawOfficer may use the information collected about you and your usage to provide LawOfficer content and features to you, including: to develop, compile, and present content and features, develop and improve new products and services; to improve your experience with LawOfficer by delivering content that may be more specifically relevant, including advertising and marketing content and correspondence; to allow you to comment and engage in online services, promotions, or discount and rewards programs; to provide you with customer support and to respond to any inquiries you may have. To provide content and advertising that is more specifically relevant to you, LawOfficer may use the information from and about you to make inferences about your potential areas of interest. Information that does not identify you as a specific person,  that is, non-identifiable data and information, LawOfficer may use this information or share it with other parties, for other purposes—to the extent permitted by applicable law.

Some of the information collected or generated by your usage of LawOfficer may be used for purposes that include:

  • Allowing service providers to assist us in providing and managing LawOfficer. The information LawOfficer collect from and about you may be made available to certain service providers, such as contractors, analytics and other measurement companies, agents or sponsors, who help us analyze and understand your use of LawOfficer , and manage and/or provide LawOfficer content and services.
  • Allowing social media sharing functionality. If you log in with or connect a social media service account with LawOfficer, LawOfficer may share your user name, picture, and likes, as well as your activities and comments with other LawOfficer users and with your friends associated with your social media service. LawOfficer may also share the same information with the social media service provider. By logging in with or connecting your LawOfficer account with a social media service, you are authorizing us to share information we collect from and about you with the social media service provider, other users and your friends and you understand that the social media service’s use of the shared information will be governed by the social media service’s privacy policy. If you do not want your personal information shared in this way, please do not connect your social media service account with your LawOfficer account and do not participate in social sharing on LawOfficer.
  • Providing co-branded services and features. LawOfficer may offer co-branded services or features, such as contests, sweepstakes or other promotions together with other companies (“Co-Branded Services”). These Co-Branded Services may be hosted on LawOfficer or on that other party’s service. By virtue of these relationships, LawOfficer may share the information you submit in connection with the Co-Branded Service with that party. That other party’s use of your information will be governed by its privacy policy.
  • Delivering relevant advertisements. LawOfficer and its service providers may use the information LawOfficer collects from and about you as described in this Privacy Policy to deliver relevant ads to you when you use LawOfficer or another service (on any of your devices). As noted above advertising networks and advertisers may use cookies and similar technologies to collect and track information such as demographic information, inferred interests, aggregated information, and information about the different devices you use and your activity on such devices, to assist them in delivering advertising that is more relevant to your interests. To opt out on internet-connected TVs, please use the  “Limit Ad Tracking,” “Interest-based Ads,” or equivalent settings on your device.  Please note that opting-out does not mean that you will stop seeing all ads.
  • Contacting you. LawOfficer may periodically send promotional materials or notifications related to LawOfficer . If you want to stop receiving promotional materials, you can follow the unsubscribe instructions at the bottom of each email.  There are certain service notification and other non-promotional emails that you may not opt-out of, such as notifications of changes to LawOfficer or policies. If you have installed a mobile app and you wish to stop receiving push notifications, you can change the settings either on your mobile device or through the app.
  • Sharing with LawOfficer affiliates and partners. LawOfficer may share your information with LawOfficer Affiliates for the purposes described in this Privacy Policy. A link to a website that lists LawOfficer Affiliates can be found at the beginning of this policy. Users visiting LawOfficer Affiliates’ services should still refer to their separate privacy policies, which may differ in some respects from this Privacy Policy. LawOfficer may share your information with business partners to permit them to send you marketing communications consistent with your choices.
  • To protect the rights of LawOfficer and others. There may be instances when LawOfficer may use or disclose your information, including situations where LawOfficer has a good faith belief that such use or disclosure is necessary in order to: (i) protect, enforce, or defend the legal rights, privacy, safety, or property of LawOfficer, its affiliates or their employees, agents and contractors (including enforcement of our agreements and our terms of use); (ii) protect the safety, privacy, and security of users of LawOfficer or members of the public; (iii) protect against fraud or for risk management purposes; (iv) comply with the law or legal process; or (v) respond to requests from public and government authorities.
  • To complete a merger or sale of assets. If LawOfficer sells all or part of its business or makes a sale or transfer of its assets or is otherwise involved in a merger or transfer of all or a material part of its business (including in connection with a bankruptcy or similar proceedings), LawOfficer may transfer your information to the party or parties involved in the transaction as part of that transaction.

E. Information Access & Control

To access, review, correct, update, suppress, delete, or otherwise limit use of your personal information that you have previously provided directly to LawOfficer, you may contact us as outlined below in Section IX; or using the mechanisms provided below. In your request, please include your email address, name, address, and telephone number and specify clearly what information you would like to access, change, update, suppress, or delete. LawOfficer will attempt to comply with your request as soon as reasonably practicable and consistent with applicable law.

If you are a resident of California, please see the section entitled “California Consumer Privacy Act Notice,” below, for more information about the rights you have under California law. If you are under 18 and a registered user of LawOfficer, you may ask LawOfficer to remove content or information that you have posted to LawOfficer by writing to webmaster{at}lawofficer.com. Please note that your request does not ensure complete or comprehensive removal of the content or information, as, for example, some of your content may have been reposted by another user.

You may request that LawOfficer not share your personal information on a going-forward basis with LawOfficer affiliates or unaffiliated third parties for their direct marketing purposes. LawOfficer will try to comply with your request(s) as soon as reasonably practicable and consistent with applicable law.

F. Other Information

Updates to Privacy Policy. LawOfficer may modify this Privacy Policy at any time. Please look at the Effective Date at the top of this Privacy Policy to see when this Privacy Policy was last revised. Any changes to this Privacy Policy will become effective when LawOfficer posts the revised Privacy Policy on LawOfficer.

Location of Data. LawOfficer is managed from the United States. If you are a user located outside the United States, you understand and consent to having any personal information processed in the United States or in any other country in which LawOfficer operates or in which LawOfficer engages service providers. United States and other countries’ data protection laws may not be the same as those in your jurisdiction. In certain circumstances, courts, law enforcement agencies, regulatory agencies or security authorities in the United States may be entitled to access your personal information.

Linked Services. LawOfficer may be linked to sites operated by unaffiliated companies, and may carry advertisements or offer content, functionality, games, newsletters, contests or sweepstakes, or applications developed and maintained by unaffiliated companies. LawOfficer is not responsible for the privacy practices of unaffiliated companies, and once you leave LawOfficer or click an advertisement you should check the applicable privacy policy of the other service.

LawOfficer is not responsible for the privacy or data security practices of other organizations, such as Facebook, Twitter, Apple, Google, Microsoft or any other app developer, app provider, social media platform provider, operating system provider, wireless service provider, or device manufacturer, including in connection with any information you disclose to other organizations through or in connection with LawOfficer.

Collection of Personal Financial Information by a Payment Service. In some cases, LawOfficer may use an unaffiliated payment service to allow you to purchase a product or make payments (“Payment Service”). If you wish to purchase a product or make a payment using a Payment Service, you will be directed to a Payment Service webpage. Any information that you provide to a Payment Service will be subject to the applicable Payment Service’s privacy policy, rather than this Privacy Policy. LawOfficer does not have control over, and are not responsible for, any Payment Service’s use of information collected through any Payment Service.

Data Retention. LawOfficer will retain your information for the period necessary to fulfill the purposes outlined in this Privacy Policy unless a longer retention period is required or allowed by law. Remember that even after you cancel your account, or if you ask us to delete your personal information, copies of some information from your account may remain viewable in some circumstances where, for example, you have shared information with social media or other services. Because of the nature of caching technology, your account may not be instantly inaccessible to others. LawOfficer may also retain backup information related to your account on our servers for some time after cancellation or your request for deletion, for fraud detection or to comply with applicable law or our internal security or recordkeeping policies. It may not always be possible to completely remove or delete all of your information due to technical constraints or contractual, financial or legal requirements.

This California Consumer Privacy Act Notice Section provides information for California residents in connection with the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA). Under the CCPA, and for purposes of this Section of the LawOfficer Privacy Policty, the term “Personal Information” generally means information that identifies, relates to, or describes a particular California resident and includes the categories listed below. This Section details the categories of Personal Information of California residents that LawOfficer have collected, disclosed, or “sold” during the last 12 months, as well as rights California residents have under California law.

Please note that the CCPA definition of “sale” does not include, for example, the transfer of Personal Information as an asset that is part of a merger, bankruptcy, or other similar transaction involving of all or any portion of our business.

Sources of Personal Information. LawOfficer ollects this Personal Information directly from California residents themselves, as well as from social media platforms (e.g., if the individual has connected a social media account to LawOfficer); joint marketing, co-branding, co- promotional, or advertising partners; LawOfficer affiliates; and sources of demographic and other information. Please note that depending on a California resident’s interactions with LawOfficer, LawOfficer may not have collected Personal Information from each of these categories of sources.

Purposes. LawOfficer may use Personal Information for the following purposes:

  • to operate, manage, and maintain the business of LawOfficer;
  • to provide our products and services;
  • to accomplish our business purposes and objectives, including:
  • personalizing, advertising, and marketing our products and services;
  • conducting research, analytics, and data analysis;
  • developing, improving, repairing, and maintaining our products and services;
  • maintaining facilities and infrastructure;
  • quality and safety assurance measures;
  • conducting risk and security controls and monitoring;
  • performing identity verification;
  • detecting and preventing fraud;
  • performing accounting, audit, and other internal functions;
  • complying with law, legal process, and internal policies;
  • maintaining records; and
  • exercising and defending legal claims.

Depending on the California resident’s interactions with LawOfficer, LawOfficer may not have used Personal Information collected about that resident for each of these purposes.

California Rights. If you are a California consumer, you have the following rights:

(1) Right to Know. You have the right to request that LawOfficer disclose to you the following information:

  • The categories of Personal Information LawOfficer collected about you and the categories of sources from which LawOfficer collected such Personal Information during the 12 months prior to your request;
  • The specific pieces of Personal Information LawOfficer collected about you during that time period;
  • The business or commercial purpose for collecting, disclosing, or selling Personal Information about you;
  • The categories of Personal Information about you that LawOfficer sold and the categories of third parties to whom LawOfficer sold that Personal Information; and
  • The categories of Personal Information about you that LawOfficer otherwise shared or disclosed and the categories of third parties with whom LawOfficer shared or disclosed that Personal Information.

To make a request for your Personal Information, please send an email to . You will need to provide your name and email address, along with other details about your request. You will then receive verification instructions by email. For certain requests, you will be asked to authenticate to your account as part of the verification process, if you have an account/profile with us. But you do not need to have an account/profile to submit a request. In some circumstances, LawOfficer may need additional information from you to verify your identity or proceed with your request. You can use an authorized agent to submit a request for your Personal Information. When submitting a request online, your authorized agent should select the “Other” option on the form and, in the field provided, include your name, your email address, and whether or not you have an account/profile with us. In addition to verifying your identity, as described above, LawOfficer also will need to verify your authorized agent’s ability to act on your behalf (e.g., by receiving a copy of your signed permission). Once verification is complete, LawOfficer may communicate directly with you for privacy and security reasons. Please note that, in some instances, LawOfficer may decline to honor your request, where, for example, LawOfficer is unable to verify your identity or an exception to this right applies.

(2) Right to Request Deletion. You have the right to request that LawOfficer delete Personal Information LawOfficere collected from you.

To make a request for deletion, please contact: webmaster{at}lawofficer.com (removing the brackets and replacing them with the @ symbol). You will need to provide your name and email address, along with other details about your request. You will then receive verification instructions by email. For certain requests, you will be asked to authenticate to your account as part of the verification process, if you have an account/profile with LawOfficer. But you do not need to have an account/profile to submit a request. Please note that you also will be asked to separately confirm that you would like to proceed with your deletion request. In some circumstances, LawOfficer may need additional information from you to verify your identity or proceed with your request. You can use an authorized agent to submit a request for deletion. When submitting a request online, your authorized agent should provide your name, your email address, and whether or not you have an account/profile with LawOfficer. In addition to verifying your identity, as described above, LawOfficer will need to verify your authorized agent’s ability to act on your behalf (e.g., by receiving a copy of your signed permission). Once verification is complete, LawOfficer may communicate directly with you for privacy and security reasons. Please note that, in some instances, LawOffcer may decline to honor your request where, for example, LawOfficer are unable to verify your identity or an exception to this right applies.

(3) Right to Opt-Out of Sale. As noted above in this section, LawOfficer shares some categories of Personal Information in connection with certain types of advertisements. Because interest-based advertising relies on cookies and other similar technologies, opting out needs to be controlled at the device and/or browser level.
