North Carolina – A man shot and killed earlier this week by Camp Lejeune security officers was a Jacksonville police officer, the police chief confirmed. The incident is being described as a “security incident,” and officials have released few details.

The Jacksonville Police Department identified the fallen officer as Philip Chiorino. Police said they were notified Tuesday by the base’s Provost Marshal’s Office after an officer-involved shooting occurred on the installation.

Camp Lejeune officials confirmed the incident happened Tuesday afternoon near Tarawa Terrace Elementary School.

Sources say he was a former Marine firearms instructor who served a couple of tours in Afghanistan.

Camp Lejeune and NCIS have so far released very little information about the deadly shooting.

Chiorino served as a school resource officer at Jacksonville Commons Elementary School.

Chiorino joined the Jacksonville Police Department in August 2024.
