Five years after a national reckoning over policing practices, new survey data reveals a gradual rebound in public confidence toward local law enforcement. The findings indicate an improvement in sentiment in key areas, including officer conduct, community relationships, and trust in fair treatment.
While challenges persist, the overall shift suggests that strategic reforms, community engagement, and accountability efforts may be contributing to the rebuilding of public trust in policing.
Confidence in Local Police Gaining Ground
Nationwide polling conducted throughout 2024 indicates a steady increase in Americans’ confidence in their local police departments. The data shows the highest levels of trust in several years, signaling a potential turning point after the significant declines observed in 2020.
This upward trend may be attributed to local agencies taking measurable steps toward transparency, adopting body-worn cameras, strengthening training programs, and improving communication with the public.
Fairness and Respect Matter
A key takeaway from the polling data is a growing sense among citizens that they would be treated fairly and respectfully in an encounter with the police. This shift highlights the importance of professionalism and courtesy in every interaction—whether it’s a traffic stop, a neighborhood patrol, or a community event.
The expectation of fair treatment remains a critical factor in how people evaluate their local departments. 87% of all U.S. adults believe that if they were to have an interaction with local police, they would be treated with courtesy and respect.
Key Findings from Gallup’s 2024 Polling
Gallup aggregated data from four quarterly web polls conducted in 2024 to assess Americans’ views on local policing. The results indicate a positive shift among Black Americans across several key metrics:
-

-

-
Perception of Fair Treatment: 67% of Black Americans believe that local police treat people like them fairly, a four-point increase from 2023 and a nine-point rise since 2022. However, this figure remains 18 points lower than the 85% of all Americans and more than 20 points lower than the 90% of White Americans who share this belief.
-
Expectations of Respectful Encounters: 75% of Black adults believe that if they were to have an interaction with local police, they would be treated with courtesy and respect. This marks an improvement from the previous range of 69% to 71% for the group. In comparison, 87% of all U.S. adults and 91% of White adults hold this expectation.
