Police investigators became aware of the scam after a resident of Central Park, Washington, received a similar call. The scam caller knew the resident’s first name and somehow knew he had a daughter.
The resident quickly confirmed that his daughter was safe—and that the girl he heard crying in the background during the ransom scam phone call could not have been his daughter.
The resident was still quite alarmed and notified police, who soon became aware of similar phone scam incidents, particularly involving a prank caller who claims to be “Batman” and demands ransom.
