Georgia officer, mother of 5, perishes in off-duty traffic fatality

CARTERSVILLE, Ga. — Law enforcement authorities in Cartersville, Ga. have confirmed that an officer with their department died in a traffic fatality in Paulding County on Thursday. The officer who perished was off duty at the time of the collision.

Family friends told WSB-TV that Officer Sarah Beth Barnes leaves behind a husband and five children.

The City of Cartersville Police Department released the following statement Friday morning:

“The Cartersville Police Department wishes to express its deepest condolences to the family of Officer Sarah Beth Barnes, Badge # 189, who passed away in Dallas, Georgia as a result of a tragic motor vehicle crash on January 30, 2020. Officer Barnes was a valuable member of our team, community, and she will be sorely missed. Please keep Officer Barnes’ family and friends in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.”

Details about the fatal collision weren’t immediately available, but the crash is being investigated by the Georgia State Patrol, AJC reported.
