NYE COUNTY, Nev. — A Nye County sheriff's deputy continued to recover at a Las Vegas hospital Friday afternoon after being shot twice at a Pahrump RV park earlier in the day, Sheriff's Department officials said.
The unidentified deputy was one of five officers who responded to reports of shots fired at Terrible's Lakeside Casino & RV Resort about 2 a.m. Friday.
Two shots struck the deputy in his side when a park resident ambushed him from behind, Assistant Sheriff Rick Marshall said.
The bullets penetrated the deputy's body armor but didn't hit any vital organs, he said.
"It was a through-and-through wound and he'll be OK," Marshall said.
The deputy was airlifted to University Medical Center, where he was in good spirits, Marshall said.
Officers shot the suspect, whose name was not released, in the legs. He also was airlifted to UMC, where he was later released and taken into custody.
The man lived in the RV park and was involved in a domestic disturbance before the gunfight, Marshall said.
When deputies arrived on the scene, they heard the shots before the suspect jumped from behind pine trees and took aim at them, Marshall said.
The deputy's back was to the suspect and he believed there was more distance between them, Marshall said.
Officer-involved shootings are rare in Nye County. Marshall said he can only think of about 10 such instances in the 21 years he has worked for the department.
