NEW CARROLLTON, Md. – Prince George's County police say a man has been killed while trying to break into a home in the New Carrollton area, marking the 12th homicide in the county this year.
Police say an occupant of the home in the 7400 block of Riverdale Road shot an intruder who tried to force his way through the door about 8:40 p.m. Tuesday.
Police spokesman Maj. Andy Ellis says the incident appears to be a case of self-defense.
Earlier Tuesday, the county saw its 11th homicide when police say a University of Maryland student was shot to death at a home just off campus. Police believe that incident may be drug related.
So far, authorities have made three arrests in connection with two killings earlier this month.
