MIAMI — Authorities on Monday charged a 17-year-old from North Miami with second-degree felony murder after an attempted burglary and shootout that left a second suspect dead and a Miami-Dade police officer injured Sunday.
Kharl Henry Lebrun was also charged with attempted armed burglary, attempted murder of a police officer and shooting a police dog, according to an arrest report released Monday by Miami-Dade police.
Officer David Carrero, 27, was shot Sunday while responding to a burglary near the 163rd Street Mall in unincorporated Miami-Dade County, authorities said.
Carrero, taken by helicopter Sunday to Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami, was in stable condition Monday, according to Miami-Dade Police spokesman Alvaro Zabaleta.
The gunfire erupted about 12:30 p.m. Sunday, when officers responded to a burglary-in-progress call, authorities said. Lebrun, and the second suspect, whom police did not identify Monday, were armed with a 9 mm handgun and a steel crowbar, according to the report.
The two attempted to break into a home through a back door but were unsuccessful, police said. Someone inside that home called police.
Lebrun and the other suspect then jumped a fence and managed to pry open the door of another home, according to the report. Police arrested Lebrun there. As they searched the yard, the second suspect opened fired on at least four officers, the report said. Police shot back, fatally hitting Lebrun's accomplice, the report said.
Police in Miami-Dade arrested Lebrun in March on burglary and criminal mischief charges and in April on burglary charges, according to state records.
