DALLAS – A man who police said was burglarizing a shed behind a Dallas home Friday was fatally shot after being confronted by the resident.
As a result, police booked the homeowner on a charge of manslaughter and for “recklessly” firing his weapon, KDFW reported.
The shooting occurred before 11 p.m., when police were called for a welfare check in the 2900 block of Vista Mar St.
Darren Dewayne Smith, 55, was discovered by responding officers and fire crews. He crashed his vehicle into another automobile after being shot. He died at the scene.
Investigators found a blood trail and followed it to a nearby home.
They spoke with the homeowner, Luis Solis-Cuevas, 36. Police were able to determine that Smith was burglarizing a shed behind Solis-Cuevas’ home, when he was confronted by the homeowner, who fired rounds at the suspect.
After being hit by gunfire, Smith fled in his vehicle, before crashing and subsequently being found by responding officers.
Police continued to interview Solis-Cuevas, and determined that he “recklessly” fired the weapon at Smith, causing his death, according to KDFW.
Consequently, Solis-Cuevas faces a charge of manslaughter.
