Washington D.C. Mayor Muriel E. Bowser named Peter J. Newsham Thursday as the city’s permanent police chief to replace Cathy L. Lanier.
Newsham, 52, will lead an agency with nearly 3,800 officers and one of the highest profiles in the country. The 27-year veteran worked as an assistant chief for 14 years and has been serving as the interim leader for several months.

In selecting Newsham, Mayor chose continuity. Newsham was a top police official during Lanier’s unusually long nine-year stint as chief, a tenure during which she transformed the department into a national model of community policing.
