Chicago – Chicago Police Officer Krystal Rivera, 36, was shot and killed Thursday night in the Chatham neighborhood. The incident occurred around 9:50 p.m. in the 8200 block of South Drexel Avenue when officers from the 6th District Tactical Team attempted to stop a male suspect. As they approached, the suspect fled into a nearby building, leading to a confrontation with another individual armed with a rifle.
During the ensuing exchange, Officer Rivera was shot. She was transported to the University of Chicago Hospital in a squad car but succumbed to her injuries.
Officer Rivera served with the Chicago Police Department for four years and was a mother to a young daughter.
Multiple suspects were taken into custody, and three firearms were recovered at the scene.
