About the Job

Under the direct supervision of the Sergeant and/or Lieutenant, the Patrol Officer is responsible for providing law enforcement services to the citizens of Brookings in a timely, efficient and professional manner. Often working alone, the patrol officer must exercise independent judgment and discretion acting decisively during times of crisis and emergency. Must work a rotation of various shifts as assigned, to include midnight, day, evening, holiday and weekend hours. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds.

Qualifications Summary: Associate’s degree or minimum of 64 semester hours of college credits from an accredited college, university, or technical school in a law enforcement related field required. Current certification from an accredited Law Enforcement Academy may be considered in lieu of educational requirement. First aid and CPR training and/or certification preferred. Basic knowledge of the principles, policies, codes, laws and statutes related to law enforcement operations with ability to maintain confidentiality required. Must have ability to effectively and efficiently perform duties under stressful conditions that might involve physical violence as well as demonstrate skill in the use of firearms, emergency vehicle operation, first aid, and other police related activities. Minimum of 21 years of age at the time of appointment with no felony, serious misdemeanor or domestic violence related convictions. Possess valid South Dakota Drivers License or ability to obtain upon appointment. Possess Law Enforcement Standards and Training Commission certificate within one year of hire date. Prefer applicants currently certified as a police officer in the state of SD.
