Under general supervision and exercising controlled discretion, provides safety and security to citizens within the community through the patrolling of assigned areas, enforcement of laws and ordinances, detaining and interviewing violators, apprehension of suspects, and response to assistance calls.

· Patrols and provides security for assigned areas, looking for unusual or suspicious activities or persons; operates patrol vehicles; provides back-up assistance to co-workers; provides scene security and protection for Fire and Medical personnel.
· Enforces local, state and federal laws, and compliance with regulations, policies and procedures; may act as field training officer for other deputies.
· Responds to emergency and non-emergency calls for service; interrogates and communicates with victims, witnesses and suspects in cases; identifies and collects evidence; performs surveillance duties as required; completes detailed reports and required paperwork; performs follow-up investigations as required.
· Arrests law violators; transports and processes prisoners; testifies in court; serves arrest and search warrants; serves and enforces child and adult orders of protection; performs building searches; conducts traffic stops and investigates traffic accidents.
· Investigates death scenes in the county as Deputy Coroner; identifies deceased and secures crime scene and property; investigates, photographs, examines, and writes narrative description of postmortem crime scene; locates and notifies next-of-kin.
· Represents the sheriff’s office at court hearings; prepares reports and materials requested and subpoenaed by the courts; and testifies in court cases.
· Identifies, attends and conducts training and educational programs and seminars.
· Performs court security and acts as bailiff as assigned.
· Serves civil process, evictions and subpoenas.
· Participates in and presents preventative education and information through community and school awareness projects; teaches and counsels those within the community on law enforcement activities, programs and referral resources.
· Maintains patrol vehicles and equipment in clean and effective operating order.
· Assists and interacts with other sheriff’s personnel, county departments, outside organizations and businesses, and federal, state and local law enforcement organizations in order to accomplish tasks.
· Performs other related duties as assigned.
· High School diploma or GED certificate.
· Completion of a POST certified regular basic course or equivalent within the last three years. OR possess a valid POST Basic certificate.
· Valid State of California driver's license is required.
Additional qualifications for lateral transfers: Must be currently working as a peace officer, and posses a valid California POST Basic Certificate or have one (1) full year experience as a peace officer in California law enforcement agency.
Special Requirements: All applicants must be 18 years of age or older with the following exception: Person 17 years of age, but less than 18, may apply but may not be appointed until they reach 18 years of age. Proof of minimum age requirements may be required.
Applicants must be of good moral character and successfully pass a thorough background investigation including polygraph, psychological examination, fingerprinting, and records check. Any offer of employment in this classification is contingent upon taking and passing a medical examination. The examination assesses a candidate’s ability to meet the physical demands of the position with or without accommodation in accordance with applicable statutes for applicants with disabilities. In accordance with Government Code Section 1031, candidate’s physical, emotional, and mental health will be evaluated and must be free from any condition which might adversely affect the exercise of the powers of a peace officer or performance of the duties of this position. Any indication of active organic disease is disqualifying. Hearing aids are not acceptable. Must be able to pass a plate test of color vision.
No conviction by any state, the federal government, or a foreign government of a crime, which could have been punishable by imprisonment in a Federal Penitentiary or a State Prison. All applicants must be United States citizens (Government Code 24103).
