The 3rd Degree: Kel-Tec P-3AT Pistol

I saw several motor officers carrying what I thought were folding knives tucked in their motor boots. Upon closer inspection, I realized they were actually carrying ultra-slim .380 ACP semi-auto pistols, which were held in place inside their boots by a metal clip.

Bullethead: Options, Options

Never forget that starting over is about as much fun as slamming your unit into the chief's G-ride because you were staring at their (adult) daughter's rear end.

Cruiser Corner: Command Presence

At the 2008 IACP show, Oshkosh had a prototype of the SandCat that I was able to poke around in. I have to say, my first impression of it is that it's one bad feline.

Drive to Survive: Winter Driving

The safest way to handle snow and ice is to not drive in it. However, for law enforcement officers, this is not an option.

Editor's Note: New Year, New Challenges

In an effort to do the very best job possible and continue to provide solid information, we're going to push into some new areas and take on some new challenges.

Firearms: Next Generation Pistol Sights

When using the red dot or reflex sight, there's no "eye sprint" from the target to the front sight and back again to confirm alignment. The shooter sees what they want to hit and they super-impose the red dot on the target.

Legal Eagle: HR 218 Pre-Empts South Dakota Prosecution

The officers argued that they were carrying concealed weapons legally due to the federal pre-emption of state law prescribed in HR 218.

Low Light Threat Management

Is it conceivable that one may attempt to merely activate the light and unintentionally fire the gun? In the perfect storm of stress and confusion, the answer, unfortunately, is yes.

License Plate Recognition: Kootenai County Goes High Tech

As a result of the implementation of a regional LPR system, investigators have been able to solve numerous crimes that go well beyond simple auto theft.

On Point: Leading with Confidence

But you may be in a leadership position where you haven't had the benefit of extensive experience in each of your assigned responsibilities. How can you develop confidence and certainty in such a case?

Staging Area: Industry News: Firearms Simulators

Although nothing beats the real thing, firearms training simulators using weapons (including shotguns and automatic rifles) from firearms manufacturers come close. Some agencies have started using firearms training simulators in qualification courses.

Staging Area: 2009 Trainer of the Year Award

Each year,  Law Officer demonstrates its commitment to training through its Trainer of the Year Award, which honors an individual who has demonstrated outstanding skills and made lasting contributions to the law
enforcement profession.

Tactical Ops: Terror, Again

There's a time to talk and a time to fight. Administrators and street officers must know the difference.

Tactics: Take the Complacency Quiz

In sum and substance, the test was really a self-assessment quiz for officers to see if they might have lost that tactical edge and become complacent in their day-to-day street tactics.

Technology: Crash & Crime Diagramming

You can't measure departure angles on scene—they just don't make a protractor that big.

Train the Trainer: Characteristics of a Good Instructor

Whether you are just starting out as a law enforcement trainer or have been at it for some time, these are offered as humble suggestions for you to consider as you hold up your own instructor mirror to see how you measure up.

It’s almost universal that an officer carries two reloads on the uniform. Most officers will have spare ammo in their briefcase, jump bag and, if they have a take-home car, in the trunk.
