SHOT Show 2009 - Day One

January 16, 2009

We got through the first day of SHOT Show 2009 in Orlando, Florida. For reasons unknown to me, this is never referred to as "the SHOT Show, but just "SHOT Show." The acronym stands for "Shooting, Hunting, Outdoor Trades." While there are plenty of exhibitors of camping gear, clothing, boots and so on, the big thing here is guns. Guns, guns, more guns, parts of guns, sights, triggers, gun cases, more guns, tripods...well, you get the idea.

Law enforcement wasn't all that big a part of the show for many years. In fact, police suppliers were made unwelcome. But there's money to be made here, and now law enforcement has its own pavilion.

The show is huge- the biggest I've ever attended. I was told it travels between the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando and the Las Vegas Convention Center because those are the only two convention facilities big enough to hold it. I saw some signs announcing next year's venue as a hotel and convention center in Las Vegas that isn't the LV Convention Center, so maybe that has changed.

Dale Stockton, Dave Spaulding, and I have been doing video and conventional interviews with vendors and writers, some of which are already posted in a dedicated box on our home page. Here, I'll be discussing some of the more innovative products I saw. I left my camera at the venue last night, so I won't be posting photos until later.
