CLINTON, Md. (WUSA) -- A Prince George's County Police officer has died, after crashing his cruiser, police said.

ODMP Remembers Officer Kevin Bowden

The officer, identified as Officer First Class Kevin Bowden, crashed the car into a pole at Branch Avenue and Surrats Road in Clinton. An SUV was also involved in the crash.

It happened at around 3:05 p.m, when crews were called out for a vehicle collision between one marked cruiser and another "civilian vehicle," police said.

The officer was off-duty at the time of the crash, police said.

Chief Magaw hinted at what may have happened during a news conference Thursday night. "We have witnesses saying the officer was cut off but we're not at a point where we can say that's what caused the accident, but certainly we're looking into that."

Bowden, the 28-year-old father of a 10-year-old son and a 4-year-old daughter, was transferred to the hospital right after the crash, where he was pronounced dead.

He was a six-year veteran on the force, police said..

The female driver in the other vehicle was taken to Prince George's Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Police have asked for "time to heal," because this is the second officer who has died in a car crash, within months, for the Prince George's County Police department. It was August, when Officer Adrian Morris was killed during a pursuit, when his patrol car hit a guardrail on I-95, ejecting him. It was later found he wasn't wearing his seat belt.
