68-year-old Joan Kendrick was still in bed when police arrived.

| Wednesday, September 1, 2010

MIAMI - Miami-Dade police officers have rescued an 81-year-old blind man and his wife, who is also blind and uses a wheelchair, from their burning home.

Officer Elizabeth Solder ran into the house early Wednesday morning and found James Kendrick in the smoke filled hallway. She put him in his wheelchair and pushed him outside. Sixty-eight year-old Joan Kendrick was still in bed when police arrived. Another officer put her in a wheelchair and pushed her out of the home.

It took about a dozen units an hour to fully extinguish the blaze. The fire is still under investigation, but early reports indicate it was an electrical fire.
